El parque geológico nacional Zhangye Danxia es, sin duda, uno de esos lugares que te dejan boquiabierto. Este conjunto de montañas, situadas en el centro de China, parecen sacadas de otro mundo. Su colorido y sus formas sorprenden a todo visitante que se atreve a pasarse por esta zona perteneciente al desierto del Gobi. No es de extrañar que la llamen las montañas arcoíris.
Zhangye Danxia fue provocado por los mismos movimientos tectónicos que provocaron el Himalaya, la estratificación de la piedra arenisca existente salió a la luz dejando esas extrañas formas y mezclas de colores. El tiempo y la acción del viento han ido dando forma a este lugar, aunque el mejor momento para visitarlo es después de un día de lluvia, ya que es en ese momento cuando los colores son más brillantes.
Aunque producidas hace más de 20 millones de años, no fue hasta hace poco cuando estas montañas se hicieron famosas. Aún así, esta zona era una de las zonas de paso de la Ruta de la Seda, que conectaba China con Europa y África. No fue hasta el año 2005 cuando, 34 de los más importantes medios de comunicación del país asiático lo votaron como una de las formaciones geológicas más bonitas de China. Pero no fueron los únicos del país ya que la Chinese National Geography hizo lo mismo 4 años después.
Hollywood no ha sido ajeno a toda la belleza que rodea el lugar y ha utilizado este sitio como plató de rodaje. Así, en 2016, la película La Gran Muralla, una co-producción sino-americana con Matt Damon y Pedro Pascal, rodaron aquí algunas de sus escenas. De la misma manera, la sexta temporada de Vikingos también utiliza este lugar como escenario.
